Business Enablement

Who we are: Canadian Fiber Optics Corp (CFOC) is a privately held telecommunications company that designs, builds, and operates fiber optic networks to provide high speed internet services in rural / remote communities.  From the design and construction of networks to the provision of end user services, to the on-going support of the fiber networks, CFOC is connecting rural communities with the world.

Why we do it: We believe in the work we do and the legacy it leaves behind. We make meaningful change possible by connecting people, businesses, and industry to the Internet.  We don’t believe anyone should be forced to leave a community because their Internet connection doesn’t allow them to be as connected as they want, or need, to be.  We enable network connections in communities where people choose to build their lives; where they work, where they watch their families grow, and where they choose to give back. We don’t believe education, healthcare, connecting with families and friends around the world, or entertainment should be restricted.

We build and operate fast, reliable fiber networks so rural Canadians, and its businesses, can thrive. We are currently looking for a unicorn to fill our Business Enablement position.

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role is responsible for supporting the efficiency and efficacy of the business.  If you think that sounds a little nebulous – it is.   This role has defined responsibilities balanced with a dose of acting on items that don’t otherwise have a defined home in any individual department.  You are the individual who ensures the organization’s white space is filled with thought and action.

Key Organizational Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Be responsible for your own health and wellness, personally and professionally, to ensure you can perform this role as needed
  • Contribute to the goals of connectivity through your performance and contributions to CFOC
  • Working responsibly on the work assigned to you within the values of CFOC.

General Responsibilities

The list below represents a list of items that you’ll be responsible for. These fall within the referenced “defined responsibilities” list but the list doesn’t start and end here. As the company grows, so will you, so will your responsibilities and so will your team.

  • Office
    • General office management including supporting the office administrator
    • Landlord interactions, working with the Procurement and Construction teams for temporary lease arrangements for warehouse space and laydown yards; and
    • Ensuring any lease, insurance and other documentation requirements are completed and stored in a document repository.
  • Project Charters
    • At our core, we build and operate fiber networks. Before we build, we need approval to invest…
    • Before the investment, manage the creation and input from all stakeholders, up to executive signoff of all project charters including the final packaging for Board presentation and signoff; and
    • After the investment, working with the Project Manager, you will produce reports on actual performance vs the underwritten model for all project charters.
  • Board Material Preparation
    • Work with the executive team to draft, finalize and circulate Board packages including any pre-reading material; and
    • Following Board meetings, work with the team to track and manage action items ensuring they are closed and communicated back to the Board.
  • HR
    • Support the internal and external HR team;
    • Manage the recruitment, hiring, retention and employee engagement programs;
    • Develop and manage the employee survey program including tracking action plans associated with survey results;
    • Develop employee dashboard/scorecard providing employees (office, field, contractors) with meaningful KPIs; and
    • Prepare HR updates as part of Board package.
  • General
    • Make recommendations on considering and/or acting on trending items based on a broad view of the business and insight into team members, department heads, executive, Board members, industry, or otherwise; and
    • Ensuring all documents with signatures between the business and external companies are filed and tracked for updates when required.
  • Information Technology:
    • Work with our outsourced IT provider to ensure our team members receive the support they need when and where they need it;
    • Managing any cross-department IT projects;
    • Recommend ways we can better use our systems to deliver against our mandate;
    • Manage software selection, integration and company testing for any new platforms or cross system software integration; and
    • Prepare IT update as part of Board package.
  • Vehicles and Other Assets
    • Work with managers and team members to ensure asset maintenance requirements are met; and
    • Ensure all insurance obligations are met.
  • Subcontractor Management
    • Track and document all subcontractor obligations – safety, performance reporting, insurance obligations and any other documentation which is required on a periodic basis.

** The list of tasks and responsibilities is not exhaustive, and the organization reserves the right to adjust the job description as required.  Job requirement includes other duties as assigned.

Required Characteristics:

We’re looking for an exceptional individual for an important role.  The successful unicorn has a very sharp mind, takes action without being asked, can figure out a way forward on an otherwise undefined path, is highly creative, believes in demonstrating excellence every day, has an insatiable appetite to learn more, looks at each success as the next one to build on, believes that before you can play hard you need to work hard, and you want to thoroughly enjoy the work that you do and who you do it with.

As important as what the successful candidate brings, it’s just as important to understand what won’t fit on the team: the unicorn has likely experienced dissatisfaction with others’ complacency, is probably appalled by any “good enough” attitude, doesn’t want to put up with individuals who lack passion, and walks away from those who believe status quo is OK. This person is also willing to look through a long job posting and tailor a mandatory cover letter to see that with the right background and experience the compensation structure is not what’s listed – convince me of you.

The basic characteristics listed on typical job postings are not good enough for you, or for us – of course you are a detailed and diligent worker, you want to be a part of something great, you want to drive meaningful change, you are flexible yet support structure, you have an ability to respond quickly and intuitively to situations that arise, and you believe perfection, while impossible to achieve, is something that drives you.  But you’re not basic and neither is the successful applicant.

Other Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Rather than defining a series of bullet points, we want to hear what you bring to the table that separates you from everyone else you’ve encountered and how your personal traits and attributes define your approach to work and life.

Education and Experience:

  • You may have a diploma, an undergrad degree, a masters, a PhD, or some combination;
  • You may have a series of experiences that trump anything you can produce on paper;
  • You may come with scars from failures that you will never experience again because of the resulting hard learnings you’ve gone through;
  • This is not about the number of years you’ve been working, what your background is, who you’ve worked for, or your education.  It’s about you wanting to take your life experiences and using them to knock this role out of the park.

Canadian Fiber Optics offers a competitive, total compensation package along with professional development opportunities for innovation and growth. Compensation will be commensurate with level of experience.

If you are looking for a purpose driven place to work, please visit our Careers page at www.canadianfiberoptics.ca/careers for application details.

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected. We thank all applicants for their interest in Canadian Fiber Optics, however only those under consideration will be contacted.
